Health Promotion Program

OBJECTIVES: To carry out regular health education sessions about health topics including HIV/AIDS, STIs, hygiene and other infectious diseases To promote family health education to young and single mothers. To provide medical assistance to children and parents from impoverished communities. IMPACT: 64 teaching sessions about HIV/AIDS, STIs, and hygiene were carried out. 18 young and single mothers were grouped and given basic skills on Family planning. 12 children were taken from the street and provided with houses to stay and regular healthy food. 15 single mothers were given pigs to improve their economy and get manure for kitchen gardens where they plant vegetables to prevent malnutrition

HPR Community Geriatrics Initiative

The Healthy People Rwanda (HPR) community geriatrics initiative (CGI) is a volunteer - based platform dedicated to promoting healthy aging and improving the quality of life of older adults in Rwanda. The initiative focuses on creating elderly-friendly environments that support dignity, independence, safety, and social participation. Through community outreach and education, HPR-CGI seeks to strengthen community-based geriatric care by training community health workers, nurses, caregivers, and family members in essential community geriatrics skills. It will mainly focus successful healthy aging through geriatric community health promotion. This will be achieved through supporting local community health capacity and fostering collaboration among healthcare providers, caregivers, families, and communities in order to promote a safer and elderly friendly environment. This initiative aims at enhancing community elderly care and support services to achieve the best possible quality of life for the senior citizens in Rwanda. Beneficiaries: Community dwelling older adults aged 60years and above, their nurses and caregivers(family) as well as community health workers, elders’ community centers, nursing homes and senior citizens’ associations. HPR-CGI team: HPR Volunteers through a community geriatric mobile team made of geriatricians, registered nurses, registered occupational and physiotherapists, social workers and nutritionists. Team leader: Geriatrician Accessibility: activities will be hosted in community centers and home where the community geriatric mobile team will be visiting with specific interventions on requests. Integrated geriatric telemedicine will be a later innovation as applicable. The service will be readily available in Kigali and countrywide through anticipated planning. Specific interventions: Geriatric community health promotion through training, campaigns and education about healthy aging as well as quality of life among the senior citizens in Rwanda. However, no interventions, nursing care and procedures will be provided. The frequency will be tailored to specific cases and individuals after the first intervention.
