Rwanda's Elderly Deserve Better Care. Here's What HPR's Community Geriatrics Initiative Is Doing About It

Rwanda has made remarkable progress in improving people’s wellness and healthcare. As a great outcome, Rwandans are living longer than ever before. According to the Fifth Rwanda Population and Housing Census 2022 (5RPHC- 2022), life expectancy has reached approximately 69.6 years, with expectations that it could rise to 80 years by 2030. The census reported that Rwanda is home to 862,929 people aged 60 years and above, representing 6.5% of the country's total population. Of these, 506,462 are women and 356,467 are men, with women making up a larger proportion of the elderly population. This progressive improvement in longevity implies a shared responsibility: ensuring that our older adults can age with good health dignity and the support they deserve in a safer and elderly friendly environment.
The challenges of aging
A longer life expectancy is a public health achievement. But it also creates new demands on a health system that was built primarily around acute disease, maternal health, and child survival to a new burden of polypathology with complications and disability. Aging often comes with physical and functional, social and multiple health challenges. In Rwanda, 12.6% of older adults live with a disability that affects daily activities such as walking, seeing, hearing, communicating, concentrating, or self-care. Mobility difficulties are the most common form of disability among older adults, followed closely by vision impairment. Women are disproportionately affected, reflecting broader health and longevity trends. Reported statistics are more than numbers, they represent parents, grandparents, neighbors, teachers, and community leaders whose lifelong contributions have helped shape Rwanda. As they age, they deserve communities that recognize their value and respond to their evolving needs.
Healthy aging begins in the community
Healthy aging is not simply about living longer; it is about living well. It means enabling older adults to remain active, independent, safe, socially connected, and engaged in their communities for as long as possible. Achieving this requires more than hospital care. It calls for informed families, empowered caregivers, trained community health workers, and communities designed to support older adults in their everyday lives.
Community-based geriatric care has become an increasingly important approach around the world because it brings knowledge, prevention, and support closer to where older people live. Rwanda has an opportunity to strengthen this approach as the country's older population progressively increase.
Introducing Community Geriatrics Initiative (CGI)
Healthy People Rwanda (HPR) is implementing the Community Geriatrics Initiative (HPR-CGI) as a community-based solution to tackle the emerging imperative global health challenge focusing on Rwanda. This is volunteer-based platform dedicated to promoting healthy aging and improving the quality of life of older adults countrywide.
The initiative aims to create elderly-friendly environments that promote dignity, independence, safety, and social participation while strengthening community-based geriatric care through education, collaboration, and health promotion.
As a non-clinical approach, HPR-CGI will emphasize on prevention, education, and community empowerment. The initiative will equip community health workers, nurses, caregivers, and family members with practical knowledge and skills that support healthy aging and improve the everyday lives of older adults. Looking ahead
Rwanda's demographic transition presents both an opportunity and a responsibility. As life expectancy continues to rise, investing in healthy aging today will shape the well-being of generations tomorrow.
Caring for older adults is not solely the responsibility of healthcare professionals. It is a shared commitment involving families, communities, policymakers, and civil society. Every action that promotes healthy aging strengthens the social fabric of our nation.
Through the Community Geriatrics Initiative, Healthy People Rwanda hopes to contribute to a future where every older adult can age successfully and healthy with dignity, remain connected to their community, and enjoy the highest possible quality of life.
Because a nation that honors and cares for its elders is a nation that invests in its own future.
